Senior Accountant
York
Salary up to £45,000 (Dependent on Experience)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Client Manager (or a strong Senior Accountant ready to step up) to join a growing and client-focused accountancy practice. This is a highly visible, client-facing role suited to someone confident building relationships, delivering advice, and proactively supporting business growth.
The Role
You will manage your own portfolio of clients, acting as their main point of contact while overseeing the delivery of accounts, tax, and advisory services. Alongside technical responsibilities, you will play a key role in mentoring junior team members and driving high standards across the team.
Key Responsibilities
Client Management & Advisory
\" Manage a portfolio of clients, ensuring all compliance deadlines are met
\" Build strong, long-term client relationships and act as a trusted adviser
\" Lead client meetings to present financial statements and discuss tax positions
\" Provide proactive business and tax planning advice
\" Identify opportunities to add value and promote additional services
Accounts & Tax
\" Prepare and review accounts and tax computations for more complex cases
\" Oversee VAT returns and financial reporting
\" Liaise with HMRC and other external stakeholders
\" Ensure all work is accurate, compliant, and professionally presented
Team Leadership & Workflow
\" Allocate and review work across the team, ensuring deadlines are achieved
\" Support, mentor, and develop junior staff and trainees
\" Monitor workflow using practice management systems and prioritise effectively
\" Provide constructive feedback and support ongoing development
Operations & Process Improvement
\" Ensure accurate and up-to-date client records and compliance documentation
\" Monitor billing, fee recovery, and debtor balances
\" Identify and implement process improvements across the team
\" Contribute to wider business objectives and continuous improvement initiatives
About You
\" Experienced Accountant with strong technical knowledge, or an existing Client Manager
\" Confident in a client-facing role with excellent communication skills
\" Strong understanding of accountancy principles and tax compliance
\" Experience with software such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks (Iris experience beneficial)
\" Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
\" Strong attention to detail and analytical ability
\" Commercially aware with a proactive approach to client service and business development
\" Experience mentoring or supervising junior staff is desirable
